Recast is built to keep your text yours. This page explains exactly what leaves your Mac and why.
What the app does with your text
When you run a template, the text you selected or typed (and any screenshot or image you attached) is sent to the AI provider you configured — either your own provider using your key, a local model on your Mac (in which case nothing leaves your machine), or Recast Cloud. The provider returns a result, which the app shows and pastes. Recast Cloud forwards requests to our model provider to generate the result and does not store the content of your requests; we keep only a count of runs per month to enforce plan allowances.
Without an account
No account is required. Provider keys are stored in your macOS Keychain and never sent to us. Your history of transforms lives only on your Mac.
Anonymous usage statistics
The app can send anonymous, content-free usage counts (which template ran, whether a run succeeded, app version) under a random identifier that is not linked to any account. This is on by default and can be turned off in the setup wizard or Settings → General at any time. It never includes your text, prompts, or keys.
With an account
If you create an account we store your email address, sign-in method, plan, Cloud run counts, device links you've created, templates you submit, and — if you subscribe — a Stripe customer reference. Payment card details are handled by Stripe and never touch our servers. We use Resend to deliver sign-in emails. We do not sell or share your data with advertisers.
Where data lives
Account data is stored on Cloudflare (D1) in their EU/UK region. Sign-in emails are sent via Resend (EU region). Payments are processed by Stripe.
Your rights
You can export or delete your account data by emailing [email protected]; deletion removes your account, submissions authored under it, and device links. You can revoke individual device links from your account page at any time.
